ABSTRACT The creation and performance of an art work cannot be separated from social context and even political context wherever it is. This is emphasized through the existence of paradigm of conceptual art related to the value of its creator which express that the value of an artwork is reflected in its ability to express feelings or particular ideas. This paradigm is influenced by Neo Marxist aesthetic theory which states that an art work cannot be separated from social context, and it can become an instrument to express particular messages and ideas from the artist to society to achieve specific purposes, one of them as media propaganda. Street art as a cultural expression appearing and growing from tumultuous social condition is one of the real examples that art cannot be separated from social and political context. Yogyakarta becomes one of the places where this street art fusing with socio-cultural urban development. In 2008, a street art artist named Andrew began to create and stick posters raising political issues in some Yogyakarta’s streets. The act he does is labeled as Anti-Tank Project. Andrew makes Anti-Tank as media to promote ideas and express social issues that in his opinion are important to be spoken up to public. The political posters he makes are widely spread through the web blog so that people can join in the act by sticking the posters as a support to the issues he raises. Analyzed using cultural studies perspective, what Andrew does with his project, Anti-Tank, can be seen as a representation practice over resistance through street art posters as the media to urge the society to express their ideas critically in public spaces in responding social-political issues e.g. social injustice, discrimination, and abuse of power by the government. However, the researcher also sees another image in Anti-Tank project which is economy-power relation practice as the impact of the existence of Andrew and Anti-Tank that can be used for certain benefit. How the propaganda messages can be presented in art media like poster is affected by the use and the process of artistic techniques of the artist. In Anti-Tank posters, the use of pictures and texts symbols as the representation of the expressed political issues becomes the entry point of how the propaganda messages can be presented through the posters. This research attempts to read and interpret the propaganda messages in visual symbols found in several Anti-Tank posters chosen by the researcher.
