Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh keberadaan sastra pada masa Victoria khususnya novel. Pada masa ini yang paling menonjol adalah penempatan karakter kaum perempuan sebagai seorang yang cerdas namun tidak bisa keluar dari tradisi-tradisi masyarakat Inggris yang menganut sistem patriarki. Salah satu contoh dari adanya fenomena tersebut adalah penempatan perempuan-perempuan dalam karya sastra era Victoria. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan tentang novel Jane Eyre yang tidak hanya berusaha menggambarkan bagaimana kehidupan masyarakat Inggris pada masa Victoria tetapi juga berusaha untuk menyuarakan aspirasi-aspirasi wanita terkait dengan stereotype mereka. Dengan hadirnya sifat-sifat Jane Eyre yang bertentangan dengan standar wanita ideal masa Victoria dapat dilihat bagaimana usaha Charlote Bronte dalam melawan standarisasi sifat feminin perempuan yang berlaku pada masa Victoria. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian untuk menganalisis karya Jane Eyre ini adalah teory Gynocriticism yang dikenalkan oleh Elaine Showalter. Menurut Showalter, kebanyakan teori feminist seringkali hanya terfokus pada bagaimana pencitraan negatif perempuan atau marginalisasi peranan perempuan dalam karya-karya yang ditulis oleh penulis laki-laki. Jarang sekali teori feminist yang sengaja mengangkat bagaimana perempuan sebagai penulis mengekspresikan nilai-nilai feministnya dalam karya sastra. Berdasarkan hasil analisis dengan menggunakan teori Showalter, maka didapatkan dua hasil penelitian: pertama, sebagai penulis perempuan, Charlotte Bronte telah menuangkan pengalaman pribadinya ke dalam karya yang ditulisnya.Yang kedua, melalui karakter Jane Eyre yang cerdas dan pemberani, Charlotte Bronte menyelipkan ide-ide feminisme, yaitu sebuah gerakan pembebasan dari kekangan budaya patriarki, mengkritisi agama Kristiani yang dianggap tidak humanis dan mendeskripsikan perempuan ideal di era Victoria.

This research was motivated by the existence of literature during the Victorian Era, specially novel. At this time the most prominent is the placement of the woman character as an intelligent woman but She could not get out of the traditions of British society that embraced the patriarchal system. One example of the phenomenon is the placement of women in the Victorian era literature. This study aimed to describe the Jane Eyre novel which was not only trying to illustrate how British life in the Victorian era is but also to vocalize the aspirations of women associated with their stereotypes. With the presence of the properties of Jane Eyre which opposed to the standard of an ideal woman in Victorian Era can be seen how the Charlotte Bronte’s effort in combating the standardization of women feminine which is applicable in the Victorian era. The theory used in this study to analyze the works of Jane Eyre is the Gynocriticism theory introduced by Elaine Showalter. According to Showalter, most feminist theory often only focused on how negative images of women or the marginalization of women' roles in the works written by male authors. Rarely feminist theory that deliberately raised how women as writers expressed their feminist values in literature. Based on the analysis results by using the theory of Showalter, it obtained two results of the research : first, as a female writer, Charlotte Bronte had poured her own experience into the works written by her. second, through the intelligent and brave character of Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte had tucking the feminism ideas, is a movement of liberation from the fetters of patriarchal culture, critized the Christian religion which was not humane and described the ideal women in the Victorian Era.
