ABSTRACT : Backaround: Discontinuation of contraceptive use is inevitable in any family planning movements. I n 1997, the highest percentage (i.e. 33.48%) of discontinuation o f contraceptive use occurred in Bandung Kulon subdistrict, Bandung municipality. There are three underlying reasons: 1). Medical reasons, such as side-effect, 2). Non medical reasons, such as time o f menopouse, planning to have another child and cost, and 3). Administration reasons, such as moving to another place, recording and reporting system, conversion to another contraceptive device which is considered as a new user. Obiective: The aim of this study is t o measure the association between identified risk factors (i.e. education, knowledge of rational contraceptive device, number of children, side effect, and family planning services) and discontinuation of contraceptive use. Study site: Based on the highest percentage of discontinuation of contraceptive use, the study was conducted in Bandung Kulon subdistrict. Methods: Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were applied. A population-based case-control study was used to measure the association between the risk factors and discontinuation of contraception use, while qualitative inquiry using a focus group discussion was carried out aftenvards to identify other potential risk factors. The sample size was 244 subjects in both groups and was selected randomly. Results and discussion: Univariate analysis revealed that all risk factors have a strong association with discontinuation of contraceptive use (OR=> 2) and the association is significant. However, from the multivariate analysis, cost and type of service (government or private) are no longer statistically significant. The risk factors of discontinuation of contraceptive use in order of importance are: service provider (OR 11.1465), level of education (OR 10.0478),. Other potential risk factors identified from the focus group discussion are husband's disapproval. Conclusion and recommendation: As a conclusion, level of education and family planning service providers are the highest risk factors of discontinuation of contraceptive use and husband's disapproval is a potential risk factor. This study recommends compulsory education reinforcement, training on counseling of rationale contraceptive for the family planning field workers and providers, and emphasizes the need for giving health education to both husband and wife.
